Classroom Pet?

Did you ever have a classroom pet? I don't think I did and Cameron did not, but I think it would be cool to have one in my classroom if I can. But, what animal do I pick? I am allergic to any form of these:
As cute as the hamster and guinea pig are; a teacher not breathing is no good.

I will NOT have one of these!

A few other ideas are:

While they are less hassle to clean up after, when you do have to clean up...it gives me the willies. I don't think I could pick up the crab or the frog, possibly the turtle but then you have to worry about salmonilla. UG

Should I just stick with the classic --

or is that lame? Also, no fun to clean a tank. HMMMMM.
What was your favorite classroom pet? What classroom pet would you have wanted?

  1. I remember having a hamster and every weekend a different kid got to take her home and clean the cage and bring her back Monday morning.

What grade are you teaching? My friend's mom had the little quarter turtle they were really cute and not so stinky.

    Good luck.

  2. Nat's 1st grade class had a rat, and like Jeri, every weekend someone brought her home! Nat loved it when we got her for a whole weekend.
They also had a whole bunch of Preying Mantis (sp?) in a bug cage and that was cool.
You should get a big ol' Taratula! I know, creepy, but you could always have some student be in charge of it! :)

  3. Also....
Last year in 3rd grade Nat's teacher had the "Welcome to the Jungle" theme! It was awesome!

Anytime the kids got too noisy, she would yell out:
"Alligator, Alligator!" and the kids would respond:
"Chomp, chomp, chomp!" and they knew that meant to settle down and be quiet!
