"Walk to Conference"

You're Invited to "Walk with Us to General Conference"

This genious idea came from Cameron, but I'll take the credit! Haha! Just Kidding, it really belongs to him. He and I are going to "Walk to Conference" starting Monday, April 7, 2008. Our walk starts at the Rocklin Stake Center and will end at the LDS Conference Center. The walk is going to be 628 miles! Not including Sundays, there are 155 days to walk.

Please join us on our walk! Here are the guidelines:

Log Miles every day. (Get a pedometer at Wal-Mart or something, or use Google Pedometer online. Walk. You can use miles walked throughout the day in normal activity as well as (or only) additional exercise miles. Most of us will find it easier to use a combination of normal activity and exercise to log miles.)

By walking 4 miles each day, Monday thru Saturday, from April 7 to Oct. 4, you will walk 620 miles. That leaves eight miles; so, choose eight days to do 5 miles instead of four. Remember, regular daily activity counts, but you will need a pedometer to track how many steps you have taken, then calculate the distance. A good estimate is about 2,000 steps/mile, but see information below:

1. Place some type of marker as a starting reference point. Place your heels at that mark.
2. Walk 20 steps in the same manner you would if you were walking for exercise.
3. Have your helper mark the point where you stopped (at the back of your heel).
4. Measure between the two markers, and divide by 20; this gives you an average stride length.

5. There are 5,280 feet in a mile.

If your stride is 2 feet long, then
for you there are 2,640 steps in a mile. Most references say there are "approximately" 2000 steps per mile, but that's an estimate based on about a 30-inch stride. The number of steps in a mile also changes depending on how fast or slow you walk--most people tend to shorten their stride when they increase the speed of their walking.

We can do it! Get walking! At the end of each week, I will post an update here so you can all see how far we have gone! Should be exciting and we are sure to get in better shape! Whew!

Love ya all,
Angel (and Cameron) : o)
